At any rate, I think any proper stress test should use AVX instructions to some extent to reflect realistic workloads. I have no idea how many games in the future will utilize AVX instructions to how much extent but, if this trend is something irreversible due to easy accessibility of AVX instructions in DX12, I think the stress test in IETU should be considered less realistic and even slightly conservative. Even though these games do not require AVX instruction-enabled CPUs, they indeed use those instructions if they are available.
I admit that this example coressponds to one of worst case scenarios because no one plays a game in a way intentionally stressing the CPU. However, I also played Assassin's Creed Origins for about 40 minutes (I let the main character stay put in the most CPU-intensive spot), it easily reached 65C, though it did not exceed this figure. This is because recently many games started to utilize Intel's AVX instructions, which are known for or rather infamous for consuming more power.Īfter running the stress test in IETU for about an hour, the highest VRM temperature was merely 60C. One thing I noted during those tests is that the stress test in Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (IETU) is far from anything extreme and actually a little bit conservative. As I posted yesterday, I ran a few tests to determine if my H310 motherboard is suitable for running i5-8400.
